The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is a comprehensive integrated sustainable development initiative for the economic and social revival of Africa.

OUR MANDATE:
The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is designed to address current challenges facing the African continent. Issues such as escalating poverty levels, underdevelopment and the continued marginalization of Africa needed a new radical intervention, spearheaded by African leaders, to develop a new Vision that would guarantee Africa’s Renewal.

MISSION STATEMENT:
To help streamline developmental efforts by all stakeholders into the mainstream of the continent’s developmental objectives as stated in the NEPAD plan of action, especially in the actualization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to reposition the State back to its enviable position through complimenting the State Government’s giant and enviable developmental programmes and to act as the focal point of bilateral / donor agencies and developmental partners in line with NEPAD Action Plans with a common  objective of attaining sustainable development.

POLICY OBJECTIVES:
Our primary objectives are as follows:

a) to eradicate poverty;

b) to place African countries, both individually and collectively, on a path of sustainable growth and development;

c) to halt the marginalization of Africa in the globalization process and enhance its full and beneficial integration into the global economy; and

d) to accelerate the empowerment of women.

THE SETUP OF NEPAD NIGERIA:
The Federal Government of Nigeria established NEPAD Nigeria office in 2003 to be the institutional mechanism responsible for the domestication and implementation of NEPAD programmes. The institution is also to identify, work and partner with the public and private sectors, civil society, donor and bilateral organizations to develop, promote and implement programmes.

NEPAD IN RIVERS STATE:
At the State level, NEPAD Rivers State formally took off on 18th February 2008 with the appointment of Dr. Tex Wariboko as the Pioneer State Coordinator, who also doubles as the Special Assistant to the Governor on NEPAD.

A three (3) day NEPAD-APRM sensitization seminar was held in Rivers State from 18th to 20th February, 2008, where all State and non-State stakeholders were in attendance for the first day. The sensitization was flagged off by the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. All sectors of society were in attendance, including Civil Society, Trade Unions, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Traditional Rulers, Clergy, Security Agencies, Children, Women Groups, the Physically Challenged, the three branches of government, local government representatives, etc.
