NEPAD IN RIVERS STATE: A three (3) day NEPAD-APRM sensitization seminar was held in Rivers State from 18th to 20th February, 2008, where all State and non-State stakeholders were in attendance for the first day. The sensitization was flagged off by the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. All sectors of society were in attendance, including Civil Society, Trade Unions, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Traditional Rulers, Clergy, Security Agencies, Children, Women Groups, the Physically Challenged, the three branches of government, local government representatives, etc. Read more about NEPAD by clicking here. |

NEPAD and NIMASA Enter Partnership Agreement on Youth Empowerment: The Special Assistant to the Governor and State Coordinator of NEPAD Rivers State, Dr. Tex Wariboko, paid an advocacy visit to the office of the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Temisan Omatseye. During the meeting that ensued, Dr. Wariboko and Dr. Omatseye held discussions on how the two organizations can synergise in the area of Youth Empowerment, and agreed that the two agencies will collaborate on the development of trainng institutions to train seafarers (under the PPP structure), the use of ex-militants in strategic Maritime Security plans, as well as capacity building for youth. NEPAD and NIMASA Collaborate on Upcoming Water Transit Safety Initiative: A team from the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Rivers State, led by Dr. Tex Wariboko, paid an advocacy visit to the Office of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). During the visit, the team met with Mrs. Aisha J. Musa, the Registrar of Ships. Mrs. Musa explained that NIMASA is working towards the registration and licensing of water vessels in the Niger Delta, with emphasis on PDSCs (Power-Driven Small Craft), like speedboats. NEPAD Coordinator Attends Sampling Training Programme for UNEP Environmental Assessment Programme: The NEPAD Rivers State Coordinator, Dr. Tex Wariboko, recently attended the commencement of the scientific (sampling) phase of the environmental assessment of oil contaminated sites in Ogoniland, which kicked off with a technical training session that took place at the Rivers State University for Science and Technology (RSUST) from 13-16 April 2010. NEPAD Rivers State is concluding plans to collaborate with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on upcoming Environment programmes and projects. After a dicussion between the UNEP Project Coordinator, Mr. Firas Abu-Tayeh, and the NEPAD Rivers State Coordinator, Dr. Tex Wariboko, during an advocacy visit to UNEP by NEPAD officials, the two agencies decided to collaborate on the development and execution of an Environmental Awareness Campaign and other existing projects. NEPAD Rivers State to Establish Waste Oil Recycling Plant: The State Office, in line with its Environmental Action Plan, is presently partnering with an indigenous oil service company to establish the first Waste Oil Recycling Plant (WORP) in Nigeria. The facility will be set up in order to achieve the following objectives: clean up the environment; create employment; and improve internally generated income.
